If you’ve been saving wedding photos that look like they belong in a magazine rather than a traditional wedding album, you’re probably drawn to editorial wedding photography.
Think beautiful light, thoughtful composition, stylish portraits and photographs that feel polished without looking stiff or overly posed.
But choosing an editorial style doesn’t mean spending half your wedding day in front of the camera.
In fact, I think it should be the complete opposite.
For me, editorial wedding photography is really about how I see and photograph a wedding.
I started out shooting fashion long before weddings, so I’m naturally looking at light, clothing, movement, composition and all those little details that can turn a nice photograph into something a bit more special.
I love beautiful portraits and photographs that feel like they could have come straight out of a magazine.
But they still need to feel like you.
Editorial photography doesn’t mean creating a wedding day that didn’t happen. It’s about noticing what’s already there, finding the best light and creating photographs that feel stylish, natural and personal.
Nearly every couple tells me they’re awkward in front of the camera.
You’re not models. Why would you know what to do?
That’s my job.
I’ve been photographing people for years, so I can normally see what I want pretty quickly. I’ll find the light, give you a little direction, get the photograph and send you back to the fun.
I shoot fast.
I’d much rather have 30 brilliant minutes with you than drag you around for hours trying to manufacture something.
The goal is to create beautiful editorial wedding photos without making your wedding day feel like one long photoshoot.
Editorial doesn’t mean standing still with a serious expression all day.
I want the gorgeous portraits, but I also want the laughing, dancing, champagne, hugs, weird faces and everything else that’s actually happening.
Some photographs I’ll create with you.
Others I’ll simply see happening and capture.
For me, the best wedding photography has both.
You get those polished, fashion-inspired portraits alongside the completely unplanned moments that actually tell the story of your wedding.
My background in fashion definitely influences my approach to wedding photography.
I’m naturally looking at clothes, shapes, movement, details and light. But a wedding isn’t a fashion shoot.
You should still be able to enjoy it.
My approach sits somewhere between editorial wedding photography, documentary photography and relaxed wedding photography.
I’ll step in when a little direction will make the photograph better, then disappear when the moment needs to happen naturally.
And Byron Bay is pretty perfect for this style.
Between the hinterland, beaches, beautiful wedding venues and ridiculous sunsets, there’s plenty to work with without needing to overcomplicate anything.
Whether you’re getting married at a hinterland property, a coastal venue or somewhere surrounded by rolling Northern Rivers countryside, the location becomes part of the photographs without taking over your day.
Usually nowhere near as long as people think.
I don’t believe you need to disappear from your wedding for hours to get amazing photographs.
We’ll get what we need, do it properly and quickly, then get you back to everyone.
Depending on your wedding timeline, we might use a short portrait session after the ceremony and another few minutes later in the day when the light is especially good.
And if an incredible Byron Bay sunset suddenly appears?
I’ll probably steal you again for two minutes.
Sorry. Not sorry.
Absolutely.
Good direction shouldn’t make you feel like you’re performing for the camera.
Sometimes it might be as simple as showing you where to stand, asking you to walk somewhere together or adjusting something slightly so the light and composition work better.
Then I’ll let the moment happen.
You don’t need a list of poses or hours dedicated to portraits.
A relaxed approach usually creates photographs that feel much more natural anyway.
Byron Bay lends itself beautifully to editorial wedding photography because there’s so much variety within the region.
You have beaches, open fields, hinterland properties, subtropical landscapes, beautiful architecture and some incredible wedding venues across Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers.
That means we can create photographs with plenty of visual variety without turning your wedding into a production.
The location, styling, clothing and light all become part of the story.
If you want beautiful, stylish wedding photographs but still want to actually enjoy your wedding day, we’ll probably get along.
My approach is pretty simple.
I’ll direct you when you need me, leave you alone when you don’t, find the good light, get the shot and send you back to the party.
